Sewing For Teens!

Age: 12-17***

It’s not sports, it’s not music lessons, it’s something different…

For teenagers who are serious about FASHION and learning to sew, we are proud to present our Sewing for Teens program! One Sunday afternoon per month, students will spend 4 hours sewing in a small-group environment and learning from a skilled Calgary Sewing School instructor.

Details:

  • Monthly 4-hour lesson in a small group of like-minded youth

  • Instruction tailored to each teen’s sewing level and desired projects

  • Families can sign up for any one, two, or all three of our 3-month sessions:
    Fall 2025: October/November/December
    Winter 2026: January/February/March
    Spring 2026: April/May/June.

  • Families are responsible for supplying fabric, thread and other supplies, under the guidance of the instructor.

"Is Teen Sewing a fit for my child?"

Your teen will love this program if:

  • They love clothing and fashion!

  • They are curious about a career in this field

  • They are crafty and creative

  • They can sit for several hours focusing on one activity - with breaks, of course!

  • They want a deep dive into the art and practical skill of sewing, acquiring real skills to take them far in this beautiful and creative world

  • They can tolerate some frustration as they learn a new skill - a bit of frustration is normal at the beginning, but will ultimately lead to skills they will love and use for years to come. It is all part of the process!

***Students must be at least in Grade 7 to take part in this program. If you have a younger child who wants to learn to sew, stay tuned! We are working on kids’ programming (age 9-12) for early 2026.

How does it work?

Projects: Each student will have the opportunity to plan with the instructor which recommended projects they'd like to make. We will be in touch in advance of the first class so that families can prepare patterns and shop for fabric. Project difficulty will be based on previous sewing experience (if any). Projects could include things like a tote bag, an apron, a stuffed animal, a dress or skirt, PJ pants, etc.

Homework: If the student wants, the instructor can send them home with steps in the pattern to complete independently at home, so that they get the most out of each lesson. This “homework” is totally optional.

Tools like seam rippers, pins, scissors, etc: If your child has their own sewing tool kit, they are encouraged to bring it! Extras will also be supplied by the instructor.

Sewing machines: This program is for those who are serious about learning to sew. If a student wants to try out sewing before committing to purchasing a machine, they are welcome to rent a CSS machine at $10/class. All students are encouraged to bring their own machine to class eventually. Recommendations for sewing machine purchase can be obtained by emailing hello@calgarysewingschool.com.

Wellness: Breaks will be provided during class, and participants should bring water and snacks.

Price: 3 monthly classes, 4 hours each: $270 per 3-month session

Class size: Class is limited to just 6 registrants to ensure a high quality of instruction.

Time: 11am to 3pm

Who will be teaching my child to sew?

Meet Monika S.

Hi! I’m Monika, a Calgary-based Foods and Fashions teacher with a passion for sewing, textiles, and hands-on creativity. I currently teach junior high and love helping students build confidence, foundational skills, and a sense of personal style through thoughtful, well-crafted projects.

I believe in the joy of making; whether it’s through exploring new design techniques or learning practical construction skills. My goal is to create an environment where learners feel empowered to express themselves, try new things, and take pride in what they create. I can’t wait to meet you!
